A year after the publication of the book, the late Iranian leader, theAyatollah Ruhollah Khomeiniissued a fatuous demanding his death, reiterated in February 2008. Rushdie lived nearly 10 years in custody.
Iran has also offered a reward of more than $3 million for anyone who kills Rushdie. The writer had not given any weight to the threats because he felt that no one was interested in the reward.
Rushdie, 75, will release a new book on February 9, 2023. The title is Victory city (Penguin). His most recent novel Quixote (Mondadori), released in 2020. The title of the novel refers to that of the five-act opera Don Quixote by composer Jules Massenet, who presented it in Paris in 1910. In 1981 he won the Booker Children’s Prize midnight.
